Traveling While Pregnant
Traveling while pregnant domestically is hard enough, traveling abroad in a long flight requires planning and preparation.
While our trip to Italy was spontaneous, we were also preparing to go to Tokyo, Japan at the end of the year so I had already started a checklist with the support of my amazing OB-Gyn and some family and friends about what to bring when I traveled.

Nausea bands-I bought these not just for traveling on a plane but for traveling in a car too. I had such bad motion sickness I couldn’t drive without throwing up. These helped so much in both situations.
Preggie Pop Drops- These were actually recommended by my dentist’s assistant who was pregnant around the same time as me. She gave me a handful of them one time I went in for some work and mentioned I was pregnant and nauseas. I kept them in my purse and easily accessible on the plane. These helped the nausea go away as soon as I felt it coming I’d take one or a few.
Compression Socks- My OB-Gyn suggested I wear these on the plane to help with swelling. However, I used them throughout the trip especially if doing a lot of walking, it helped my legs not feel too sore. Just remember to take breaks when wearing them.
Collapsible Bottle Water- While you may have heard the myth that Europeans don’t drink as much water as Americans, this is not true. You can find bottled water in convenience stores and tourist areas. However, I suggest you bring one for yourself to remember to stay hydrated especially in a walkable city or if doing walking tours. This truly came in handy to have.
Travel Pillow- You may want to go for the regular neck pillow, but my husband got these pillows specifically because I was pregnant and he wanted me to be extra comfortable. Although, I will tell you I was slightly embarrassed when he was blowing it up since it’s not your typical pillow. But I was comfy.
Detachable & adjustable pregnancy pillow- I loved my big U shaped pillow for use at home, but this pillow was detachable and adjustable and fit in my big luggage. Normally you can ask for more pillows at the hotel you stay at but I found that this helped me sleep much better.
Portable Fan/Charger- While I traveled during winter, I highly recommend this fan + charger. It is also a flashlight so it can come in handy when you least expect it. You never know you may have a layover in Hawaii like I did and end up needing the fan. In Europe I used it mainly for the charger part.
Bio-Oil Skincare Travel Set- I used this for my trip to Japan I was a little farther along than when I went to Japan. The bio-oil is what I used for nipple-relief, they just felt so dry and achy. This was recommended to me by my sister-in-law and it helped me so much not only while traveling but in general at home too.
